The President's Perspective -- November 2019

We are one-third the way through this church year (which runs from July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020). In the past four months, in addition to welcoming Rev. Christe Lunsford as our settled minister, we’ve made good progress on many aspects of congregational life.

  • Our new Choral Director, Christina Sisson, has been hired and is smoothly running rehearsals and leading the choir on Sunday mornings.
  • The Committee on Ministry, whose job it is to assess both the overall congregational ministry and Rev. Christe’s ministry as a part of their Preliminary Fellowship, is fully formed and meeting. Members: Mary Anthony, Joy Avery, Vic Harrell, Peter Marino, Gene Mills, and Marilyn Roberts.
  • The Personnel Committee has already starting meeting and is reviewing the personnel charter. Members include Kirsten Flamand, Diana Hagan, and Wendy Visscher.
  • The Right Relations Team has begun to communicate and plan its first gathering. Members are Richard Curtis (starting in the spring), Norden Lucke, Samara Powers, and Gilda Sall-Griffin. Anyone else interested in serving on this Team, please let me know.
  • We have a Security Team formed that has recently had two local officers do an assessment of the campus and make recommendations. They are reviewing all the security changes that will improve life at UUFG and developing a long-term plan for implementation. Members include: Judy Bruce-Mangle, Jon Colburn, Jeff Dunn, Warren Hodge, Harry Mangle, Cindy Prabst, and Marilyn Roberts.
  • We have an Internal Financial Review Team reviewing our fiscal practices, policies, and procedures who are completing their work this month. They include Doris Hargrave, Martha Harrell, and Marilyn Kershner.
  • Small Touchstone Groups are having their second meetings in November, and other adult religious education and exploration offerings are in the works. Contact Aaron Broadwell to learn more.
  • Classrooms 1-4 have a new air conditioner, so the rooms that our Family Promise guests will be in have temperature control.
  • Children and Youth RE held a successful Trunk-or-Treat and next month will be asking the Board to support a UUFG-supported weekly community child event, called “Messy Play Days.” Contact DRE Heather Arata or Leslie Chase to learn more.
  • UUFG participated in the Gainesville Pride weekend, both in the parade and running a booth.
  • We have held a number of Social Justice events, including a Beyond the Binary workshop, a Moving Into Prison Ministry workshop, Queerball, movie screenings, and Family Promise hosting with more events already planned. Contact Susan Chandler or Alice Primack to learn more.

What lies ahead:

  • First Sunday Town Halls – Dec 1, Jan 5, Feb 2, March 1, April 5, May 3, June 7.
  • Social Justice Congregational Meeting – typically January
  • 2020 Auction – scheduled for February 8, 2020
  • 2020 Stewardship/Pledge Drive
  • Rev. Christe’s Installation – scheduled for April 19, 2020
  • Annual Meeting – May 2020
