Looking to Our Future

Hello Beloveds,

During this uncertain time, I know it is hard to think about what tomorrow might bring and what we at UUFG might be doing as a community in the future. But for some of you it may be really important.

Of course, we are planning and dreaming of our future. Considering what we will do and where we will go is a way that we can find hope together. So I want to let you know that we are still planning.

  • We are looking into how to schedule the Our Whole Lives (OWL) program for everyone next year, beginning in the fall. We hope to be running children’s levels at the same time as adult levels, so that the whole UUFG family is involved.
  • We also are hoping to run a secular version of K-1st grade OWL, for a small fee, that will be open to the larger Gainesville community, with special invitations to our friends that have been coming to Monday Messy Play Dates.
  • We are actively planning a UUFG trip to the Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, both in Montgomery Alabama, both created by the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI). Susan Christy has been leading the organizational pieces of this trip and asks if you are interested on being on the planning team to please get in touch with them.

These are just some of the reasons why this trip is important work:
  • To further our understanding, as individuals and as a congregation, of the role racial terrorism has played, and continues to play, in the system of white supremacy in the US.
  • In the words of the EJI, “…a more productive conversation about justice requires knowledge of historic injustice.”
  • In aid of the Truth and Reconciliation process that is underway in Alachua County, to help bring to light the history of racial terror here, and perhaps help in healing the wounds that still fester.

We hope this trip could take place in the fall and of course we will have to wait a bit before we understand the best timing.
  • Some of you have asked about hosting larger events, like concert series, dance parties and trivia nights. These are all great ideas of ways to build community. If you are someone who thinks you might share your organizing talents by being on a leadership team that would produce these events please let me know.

In Faith and Love

Rev. Christe
