The Almost Church Revitalized - envisioning the future of Unitarian Universalism by Michael DurallNow at the Book Cart this Sunday. If a book could create an inspired shared vision for UUism, this would be the one, IMO. "How-to guide for Unitarian Universalist congregations to become stronger-minded and more successful in achieving their hopes and dreams for the future. Contains scores of ideas to stimulate growth, invigorate leadership, transform the annual pledge drive and rethink Unitarian Universalism's role in a modern religious landscape." |
The titles below are just a small selection of the wonderful used books that are for sale at our UUFG BookStore, in the Phillips Social Hall, following Sunday service.- "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly", Jean-Dominique Bauby, paperback. In December 1995, Jean-Dominique Bauby, the 43-year old editor of French "Elle", suffered a massive stroke that left him completely and permanently paralyzed, a victim of "locked-in syndrome". Where once he had been renowned for his gregariousness and wit, Bauby now found himself imprisoned in an inert body, able to communicate only by blinking his left eye. The miracle is that in doing so he was able to compose this stunningly eloquent memoir, which was published two days before Bauby's death in 1996. It is less a record of affliction than it is a celebration of the liberating power of consciousness.
- "Wisdomkeepers: Meetings With Native American Spiritual Elders", Steve Wall and Harvey Arden, hardcover. "The spiritual heritage of Native American people is here – it has not been extinguished. I believe the spiritual fire still burns and is beckoning for America, indeed the world, to come closer, to listen, to learn, and to share in its warmth and comfort."
- "Historical Atlas of World Mythology, vol I. The Way of the Animal Powers. Part 2: Mythologies of the Great Hunt", Joseph Campbell.

Black History Month Books |
What book will you choose to read and report on for the first Wednesday evening in March? LoraKim will lead a discussion on the books that most interested people during February Black History Month. Many thanks to the generous donor who has recently given us many excellent used books. Those of particular interest for Black History Month are:
"Their Eyes Were Watching God", Zora Neale Hurston, paperback. This has been described as "one of the finest black novels of all time". It is one of the most poetic works of fiction by a black writer in the 20th century and one of the most revealing treatments in modern literature of a woman's quest for a satisfying life. "Reflections in Black: a History of Black Photographers 1840 to the Present", Deborah Willis. This is a large-size 348-page book just loaded with photographs. "If a picture is worth a thousand words, then Deborah Willis has given us nothing less than an epic of Homeric proportions. Taken together, Willis's magnificent gathering of images accompanied by her powerful narrative rewrites American history." "Ebony Pictorial History of Black America", vol. 1. African Past to Civil War.
"Ebony Pictorial History of Black America", vol. 2. Reconstruction to Supreme Court Decision 1954.
"Ebony Pictorial History of Black America", vol. 3. Civil Rights Movement to Plack Revolution. |
