Spiritual Practices | UU Fellowship of Gainesville

Do you have a spiritual practice? Do you know what a spiritual practice is? Does the very term sound somewhat intimidating—especially to Unitarian Universalists? Did you think that UUs do not have spiritual practices?

For UUs: “A spiritual practice is an action designed to make a change in our deepest selves. It is something we do to gain new understanding of ourselves and leads to growth, change, and a more loving way to be in the world. We stretch ourselves in spiritual practice. Meditation, prayer, walking mindfully, hiking, and feeding the homeless can all be forms of spiritual practice.” Each person should consider having an individual, daily practice; a group practice, weekly or monthly; and an annual retreat.

Tuesday Morning Meditation

Every Tuesday morning at 8:30 am, members meet in the Fellowship's Common Room to practice meditation and discuss a shared text. Sessions last about an hour, and we welcome newcomers. If you're not experienced in meditation, training is provided! For information, contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Singing Meditation

What is Singing Meditation?

1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month, 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM

To quote one source, "Singing Meditation is an interfaith spiritual practice that combines singing – of many types – with group observation of silence. Combining the two practices, which are often engaged in separately, results in a synergy that enhances each component."

Come join us for a relaxing and energizing session: the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month, 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the UU Fellowship of Gainesville Choir Room.

No singing ability needed - just the desire to meld your voice with others and practice silence between the songs. There is a leader who sings each line of the chant (from mixed traditions), it is repeated, and then the full chant is sung repeatedly until there is a mutual tapering off. Holding your eyes closed during this process, allows your entire collection of senses to focus on other sounds - quite extraordinary!

We encourage the community to join us; this is not restricted to members of our church. Hope to see you there.
