Overview

Individually, most of us may never be able to make a lasting impact with our charitable gifts—not even with our last bequests.  But by pooling our gifts with others at UUFG, we can be a large and continuing force for good in this area.  Our gifts will reach far beyond our lifetime through the UUF Foundation.

The long term goal of the Foundation is to manage an asset base of $1,000,000.

Currently (12/31/2009) the fund balance is $223,000.  To reach our long term goal we need your help. Your influence—your legacy—will keep growing over the years. Please read on.

About the Foundation and its Management

The Foundation is a trust fund which was established in 1982, and operates as an agent of the Fellowship. Its purpose is to receive money, invest, and make grants to strengthen liberal religious causes, in accordance with the stated mission of the Fellowship.

How is the Foundation funded?

The Foundation accepts gifts or bequests from members of the congregation or others who wish to make a memorial or honorary gift.

Who controls the Fund?

Five directors who are appointed by the UUFG Governing Board direct the activities of the Foundation. They may serve for two three year rotating terms. All serve without pay or other remuneration.

How are funds managed?

Foundation monies are actively invested in a way to maximize capital growth while safeguarding the principle. All directors must agree on investment decisions. Resources of the Foundation are not spent for current operating expenses of the Fellowship, nor are they to be used in for-profit ventures which might jeopardize the status of the Foundation as a charitable trust.

How does the Foundation make grants?

Applications for grants are available twice a year in the spring and fall. Grant application forms are signed by the Program Council chair before they are submitted to the Foundation. This ensures that they are consistent with our UUFG principles and not in conflict with any existing UUFG programs. The requests are then reviewed by the Foundation Directors. Award of grants requires the approval of at least four of the five Directors.

How has the Foundation spent funds in the past?

Items as diverse as materials promoting the growth of the congregation, religious education enrichment, a sound enhancement system, computers, landscape beautification and religious symbols for the front of the sanctuary have been provided to the Fellowship by Foundation grants.

How does the congregation know the current status of the Foundation's work?

The Foundation makes an annual report to the Governing Board in March following the close of its fiscal year and is available by request of any UUFG member. A summary of that report, as well as current Foundation activities, appears in The Millhopper newsletter and is available on the UUFG website.

How can I find our more about the Foundation?

You may contact any Director who will be happy to discuss your gift with you, or review the Planned Giving page for more information.
